Something is lost here. There are many things that are obviously lost. Having a nice and affordable place to live in, for example, or strong unions. But it’s not that, it’s something else. It has left us in such a determined way, that it is impossible to say what that thing was, that got lost. It can’t have happened long ago. Maybe just five years, or twenty.
Something is lost here, and we don’t know what it is. What was the thing that is now lacking? Was it subtle and fragile? We don’t know. We circle around that lack, follow its traces, trying to find out, how it came into being. Why did we start lacking it, and how? Through studying the story of this loss, we hope to get a feeling of what that thing could have been.

Tilman Kanitz and Niklas Draeger teamed up with stage and costume designer Anna Philippa Müller and co-choreographers Frank Willens, Ixchel Mendoza and Shade Théret, to explore this loss in a spatial experiment: How to relate to the space we are in? How do environments support human relations, or evaporate them? How can we embody space? How do environments disperse or swallow sound? How can we listen to the surrounding sounds, what can we add, and how does this addition support or transform what is already there? How can we be together?

    Returning Home II

Penelope waits half her life for Ulisse to return, making longing her purpose in life, before Ulisse reappears after decades of war and wandering. What has remained of the former familiarity? Is it even possible to return home after what has happened? And what does home mean for each individual? The music theatre piece RETURNING HOME, directed by Ludger Engels and conducted by Tilman Kanitz, explores these questions using Claudio Monteverdi’s opera Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria (1640) in reflection of Korean gagok songs that were composed at almost the same time.

The musical forms of expression, which at first seem so different and deal with motifs of home and longing in different ways, meet, overlap and connect in the musical and spatial dialogue of two ensembles. This connection creates spaces for new things and places of encounter with oneself.

    Returning Home

For half her life, Penelope waits for the return of Ulysses, making longing the very fabric of her existence—until, after decades of war and wandering, Ulysses finally reappears. But what remains of their former intimacy? Is it even possible to return home after everything that has happened? And what does “home” mean to each of us?

These are the questions explored in the music theatre production RETURNING HOME, directed by Ludger Engels and musically directed by Tilman Kanitz. The production draws on Claudio Monteverdi’s opera Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria (1640) and reflects it through the lens of nearly contemporaneous Korean Gagok songs.

Though the musical traditions may seem worlds apart, both engage deeply with themes of home and longing. In this production, two ensembles enter into a musical and spatial dialogue, their sounds overlapping, contrasting, and ultimately intertwining. Out of this connection, new spaces emerge—spaces of encounter, reflection, and inner resonance.

    –

Und was bedeutet Heimat?
